Apartment moves: elevators, stairs, and building rules

September 28, 2026· 5 min read

Apartment and condo moves add logistics that houses often skip. Most buildings require a certificate of insurance and a reserved freight elevator window.

Book your elevator slot before you confirm the move time with your mover. If the slot is only two hours, tell the coordinator so crew size matches the workload.

Measure tight turns and doorways for oversized items. Sometimes a sofa fits only on its end; sometimes it needs disassembly. Photos help the office plan padding and tools.

Protect common areas: many buildings require floor mats or wall guards. Ask management what they supply versus what you must provide.

Plan parking for the truck. A long carry from a distant lot adds time and labor. If street parking is permit-only, secure spots or loading zone approval early.
